We are a cute, quirky cafe located in Colyton - just out of Feilding. Our building is quite unique being made out of two shipping containers with beautiful outdoor seating. We are a diverse cafe with both naughty treats, gluten free foods and vegan options. We are fond of creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere and love getting to know our customers on a personal level.
The name originates from the first owner - herself being ginger and a 'bird' (lady). Funny enough my natural hair colour is strawberry blonde too!
Also, a bit about me...I'm Alice, the new owner of the Ginger Bird Cafe out in Colyton. I recently bought the cafe off local girl Ellen Melody (Bradbury) and her husband Mark Melody.
I LOVE cooking and baking, it has been my passion since I was young. I studied Integrated Health at Massey, but decided that health was more of a study area of interest rather than what I wanted my career to be solely focused on. So, I left uni, my completed diploma in hand, and worked on a goat farm for a while until I really figured out what I wanted to do!
Lucky for me, I stumbled across Ginger Bird Cafe a few months later.
I worked at the cafe for a week before being told by Elle that her and Mark were planning on selling it. Obviously that was a little concerning considering I had just started and didn't know whether I was going to have a job.
I continued working for Elle and Mark while they had the cafe on the market and didn't even really consider buying it - although I have ALWAYS wanted to own my own cafe. It took a customer to come in and say to me, "why don't you buy it?" for me to even think about that option! With the wise advice of my Dad and the backing of the GB team I decided BOOM, let's do it.
Ellen has built the cafe to be all it is today and I'm just carrying it on really! Just adding my little touch as I go, but still keeping it as what it originally was. Rustic, yummy and a happy environment.
And here we are...
I'm 21, still learning as I am going, but I have such a passion for cooking and making people happy and I get to do exactly that everyday with the cafe!
It's a long road ahead but I wouldn't want it any other way.
So come out to support, support local and I hope to make your day a little bit better after coming and seeing us!
